Knee Pain

Knee pain is caused by damage or issues to tissues both inside the knee and outside the knee joint. Inside the knee joint, stability is determined by the shape and health of your cartilage, also known as your meniscus, in addition to the ligaments supporting the knee – the ACL, PCL and LCL. Outside the knee joint, stability is provided by the muscles surrounding the knee and the MCL. The kneecap is a largely complicating factor, often out of position and causing pain and irritation to the surrounding tissues. Common signs of knee pain or injury include knee swelling, weakness or giving way, clicking or locking.

Common causes of knee pain are

  • Kneecap (patella) issues
  • Muscle weakness, strains, or injuries
  • ACL/PCL or MCL/LCL
  • Meniscus strains, tears, injuries
  • Knee osteoarthritis

Neck Pain

Neck pain, sometimes called cervicalgia, is a pain in or around your spine beneath your head. It may radiate to the shoulders, head, or even hands, limiting movement. You might have axial neck pain (felt primarily in your neck) or radicular neck pain (pain that shoots into other areas, such as your armpit, shoulders, arms, or hands). Treatment involves laser therapy to address inflammation and pain, cervical traction to decompress your spine, gentle stretching, cupping and dry needling to resolve cervical trigger points or ‘knots,’ tru-sculpt muscle stim to improve your neck strength, postural endurance and access to our Stretch Lab to maximize your Functional Range of Motion.

Causes for neck pain include:

  • Cervical Degenerative disc disease
  • Cervical Herniated, bulging disk
  • Cervical Whiplash/Neck Sprain or Strain from motor vehicle accidents falls, sustained sitting or lifting
  • Cervical Osteoarthritis/Spondylosis

Shoulder Displacement/Injury

Shoulder instabilities, dislocation, injuries or overuse affect mobility and cause pain. The shoulder is a ball and socket joint; it’s formed where the ball at the end of the humerus (upper arm bone) fits into the socket of the scapula (shoulder blade). Common signs of shoulder injury include pain, weakness, decreased range of motion, clicking or instability. Treatment includes relocation, rest, shockwave therapy to flatten any calcium deposits on your tendons, laser therapies to reduce inflammation, physical therapy, and sometimes surgery to repair ligaments or tendons.

Some common causes of shoulder pain are:

  • Rotator Cuff Injury/Sprains/Strains
  • Rotator Cuff Tendonitis
  • Shoulder Osteoarthritis
  • Labral tears/SLAP Lesions
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • A/C Joint Fractures or Separations, Collarbone Fractures

Hand/Wrist Pain

Your wrist joint contains 14 small bones that help you bend, straighten and rotate your hand and wrist. Conditions that cause pain, numbness or tingling in the wrists and hands are related to the bones, muscles, nerves and circulation in the hand. Laser therapies, shockwave therapies, rest, ergonomic changes, splints, and therapeutic exercise help alleviate discomfort and prevent further damage.

Causes for Hand/Wrist Pain include:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Arthritis
  • Wrist sprain
  • Falls
  • Repetitive injuries through work (typing, gripping, lifting) or sports

Elbow Pain/Injury

Elbow pain is a common injury, and it can involve any component of the joint, including tendons, bursae, bones, or nerves. Common signs include elbow swelling or difficulty gripping or rotating your forearm, difficulty resting on your elbow, and pain while sleeping or lifting. Laser therapies, shockwave therapies, Tru-Sculpt muscle stim, RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation), bracing, and physical therapy aid recovery.

The most common causes of elbow injuries are:

  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis ex. Tennis/Golfer’s Elbow
  • Overuse of the joint: leaning on elbows over-gripping, repetitive lifting or straining, falls, sleeping with forearms in rotation or awkward position
  • Elbow Fracture

Back Pain

Back pain can result from muscle strain, herniated discs, or spinal issues. The most common cause of back pain is a torn or pulled muscle and/or ligament after a fall, car accident (MVA), lifting or even sustained sitting. You might feel back pain, a heaviness in your back, difficulty bending, sitting, lifting or twisting, or even numbness and/or weakness in your legs. Treatment at F.R.O.M. Toronto Pain Relief Clinic includes shockwave therapies to flatten scar tissue and muscle spasms, laser therapies to improve blood flow, and resolve nerve pinching by pushing disc material forwards into the spinal column, allowing for disc healing. We use lumbar traction to decompress your spine, therapeutic exercise and tru-sculpt muscle stim to strengthen muscles around the spine and provide you access to our Stretch Lab to return you to your Functional Range of Motion.

Causes for back pain include:

  • Lumbar herniated or bulging disc
  • Lumbar degenerative disc disease
  • Lumbar Osteoarthritis or Spondylosis
  • Curvature of the spine aka Scoliosis
  • Whiplash from motor vehicle accidents, falls, sustained sitting, lifting

Ankle/Foot Pain

Ankle/foot pain, often due to sprains, fractures, or conditions like plantar fasciitis, hampers mobility. The ankle is a hinge joint that allows the foot to move in multiple directions: away from the body, as in pointing your foot (plantar flexion) and toward the body (dorsiflexion). Similar to the hand, the ankle comprises several bones arranged in layers to provide stability close to your leg and mobility in your toes and forefoot. You may have difficulty walking or bending/flexing your ankle, swollen ankles, weak ankles or loss of range of motion. Laser therapies, shockwave therapies, Tru-Sculpt muscle stim, RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation), bracing, and physical therapy aid recovery.

Common causes of ankle and foot pain are:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Ankle sprain
  • Tendonitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Foot and toe fractures
  • Toe Bunions

Jaw/facial pain

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues cause pain and tenderness in your jaw joints and surrounding muscles and ligaments. Your mandible, or jaw bone, connects to your skull in a combination of 2 joints. Because of its location, TMJ pain can cause ear pain, headaches, facial pain, neck and shoulder pain, difficulty eating, nausea and dizziness. Common signs of TMJ-related pain include jaw pain, difficulty opening and closing your mouth, difficulty chewing and or clicking or feelings of instability or tightness in your jaw. TMJ treatment varies from person to person and may include manual therapy to reset disc issues, shockwave to flatten scar tissue and muscle spasms, manual therapy to address headaches, physical therapy, custom mouth guards and jaw surgery.

Causes include:

  • Teeth grinding
  • Jaw injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Everyday wear and tear
  • Jaw Shape asymmetries or Jaw Misalignments

Following this assessment, a customized treatment plan will be created to suit your unique needs and requirements.

The number of sessions required varies depending on the individual’s condition and response to treatment. Our physiotherapists focus on achieving the best outcomes in the shortest time possible, while still considering the importance of a gradual and safe recovery process.
